On a home inspection near Waterford NY I took a picture of this roof framing member because it makes a great point. Mold in the attic is one of the common issues found during a home inspection. Darkening around nails, as seen in the picture to the side here, can indicate a lack of ventilation which can lead to a large mold issue in the future if not taken care of. The darkening is generally caused by temperature differential, so condensation builds up on the nails since they are generally a bit cooler. Look for this during your home inspection and make sure you take care of the issue before it becomes a large issue.
